Two Must-See Musicals Take the Stage at the Abbey Theater This August

(Dublin, Ohio) — The Abbey Theater of Dublin is bringing two standout productions to the stage — one a bold, youth-powered take on a Broadway sensation, and the other a high-energy comedic premiere that’s equal parts clever and chaotic.

‘Hadestown: Teen Edition’

First up, “Hadestown: Teen Edition” offers a fresh take on the Tony Award-winning musical, brought to life by a talented cast of local youth performers. This powerful adaptation weaves together the ancient tales of Orpheus and Eurydice and King Hades and Persephone, using American folk traditions and New Orleans-inspired jazz to tell a story of love, sacrifice and the struggle between hope and despair.

Performances take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 7-8 and 13-16, with matinees at 2 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at DublinOhioUSA.gov/Abbey-Theater.

“We are honored to present the Dublin premiere of ‘Hadestown: Teen Edition,’” says Abbey Theater Supervisor Joe Bishara. “This production brings Broadway’s latest mega-hit to our stage while showcasing the incredible dedication and talent of the next generation of performers. We hope audiences will be moved by this timeless story and inspired by the artistry of these young actors.”

‘Gutenberg! The Musical!’

A fast-paced, two-man parody packed with laughs and offbeat charm, “Gutenberg! The Musical!” makes its regional premiere at the Abbey Theater. Performances will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10, and at 2 p.m. Aug. 16 and 17. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at DublinOhioUSA.gov/Abbey-Theater.

In this comedic musical, aspiring playwrights Bud and Doug perform a backers’ audition for their hilariously inaccurate and over-the-top production about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. Armed with enthusiasm and a collection of hats to play every character, the duo dreams of Broadway fame and a producer to make it happen.

“We’re proud to bring ‘Gutenberg! The Musical!’ to the Abbey as its regional premiere,” says Abbey Theater Supervisor Joe Bishara. “Fans of musical theater, sharp satire and over-the-top comedy will love this wildly inventive production — it’s big on laughs, even if it’s light on budget.”

“Gutenberg! The Musical!” Cast:

  • Jonathan Collura as Bud Davenport
